Foods that should always be kept in the fridge

Are you storing your foods properly? There are many foods that seem to end up in the pantry or on your counter that really should be kept in the refrigerator. Failure to keep these items chilled can result in spoilage, shorter-shelf life, and less-flavorful foods over time.

Some foods that should always be kept in your fridge are:

Condiments

Make sure to keep condiments, such as ketchup, mustard, horseradish, and soy sauce, in your refrigerator. These items often lose their strong flavors and freshness when stored at room temperature.

Syrups

Another item to keep in your fridge are syrups. While maple syrup can be left out for a period of time, it will spoil if left out too long.   Chocolate syrup will last a lot longer if refrigerated, typically up to six months.

Produce

Oddly enough, many consumers keep produce on their counter or in a bowl on the kitchen table which can lead to premature spoilage. Refrigeration prevents bananas and avocados from becoming too-ripe; lemons, oranges, and grapes will last four-times longer when kept in the fridge.

Oils

Always keeps cooking oils in the fridge as they can become rancid when exposed to light and the heat of a kitchen. Also, make sure to keep them covered tightly instead of in open-mouth cruets.

Nuts

Nuts of all kind and nut butter should also be refrigerated when stored. Nuts can last up to a year in the fridge, and nut butter can become rancid when it is left out.

Additionally, always refrigerate anything organic or without preservatives to extend its shelf-life and ensure freshness. Use these tips to properly store and enjoy foods, while ensuring your family is eating fresh and flavorful food each time they open the refrigerator.
