I have a septic system instead of public sewer. How often should I have it checked or inspected?
Septic systems should be inspected and the septic tank pumped out once every three to five years on average. This may vary according to size of family and how extensively your plumbing system is used. More and more, municipalities, at the requirement of the PA Department of Environmental Protection, are requiring homeowners with septic systems to have their system inspected and pumped out. Having this done will prevent unwanted solids from migrating into the drain field if the septic tank is overfull from not having been pumped out. The potential damage this can do to a drain field would make for a very costly repair or replacement.
