At what temperature should I set my thermostat?

Everybody has their own personal preference. When you are in your home, set it to where you feel comfortable and don’t be too concerned with what the temperature setting reads. If you are concerned about energy costs, set it back a little in the winter for heat and higher in the summer when using the air conditioning and dress accordingly.

When you leave your home, try to avoid drastic temperature changes, especially with a heat pump and/or air conditioning system. If you are going to be away for an extended period of time (as in days, not hours), it might warrant setting the temperature more than 5° different than your norm. Otherwise, if you set it for a greater reduction in either heating or cooling, depending on the season, it will cause your system to work harder than necessary. Your system is designed and sized for optimal efficiency and making significant temperature setting changes causes it to be less efficient for its designed size and performance.
