Images of the Fire
"...a bolt flashed, with a loud crack; it looked like it struck the grass just along the parking lot..."
--- I. Wayne Brubaker, founder of Brubaker Inc. as he recounted the evening of June 9th, 2011
I. Wayne Brubaker and his wife, Evelyn, were watching the news on TV in the early evening hours of June 9th. Storms were rolling through the area, as had been typical of late in the first several days of June. Only 15-20 feet away, in the adjacent building on the other side of their patio, was the Brubaker Inc. Appliance Store and Remodeling Showroom, along with the Accounting offices. Wayne built much of this building, with portions dating back to the late 1940's or early 1950's. Additions were built on over the years; with major ones in 1956, which is where the front entrance is, and in 1966.
As the storm bore down, the alarm in the Store was tripped. Wayne went to turn it off; the keypad being just inside the entrance, in the lobby. As he was leaving the building, a bolt of lightning flashed, with a loud crack. "It sounded like a shotgun was shot next to my ear", he said later. It looked like it struck the grass just along the parking lot.
About 20 minutes later, after looking out his window, Wayne noticed that there were several cars in the store parking lot. The store was not open that evening, so he went out to investigate. Upon arrival, he was met by an individual who told him that the building was on fire.
Our thanks go out to that vigilant passerby who saw the fire and called 911. Who knows how much worse the damage and potential loss of life could have been?
